Sugarbeets: A Way of Life in ND

North Dakota has a rich agricultural history, and one crop that holds a special place in the state's heart is sugarbeets. In this blog post, we'll explore the significance of sugarbeets in North Dakota, the labor-intensive process involved in their cultivation, and the pride and legacy associated with this essential crop.

A Family Legacy

For many families in North Dakota, sugarbeet farming is more than just a profession – it is a way of life passed down through generations. Dreams of becoming a farmer can begin in high school, just as it did for Scott Krogstad. To Scott, a farmer in Thompson, ND, growing sugar beets isn’t just farming - it’s a way of life and his family’s legacy,

Challenges and Unwavering Dedication

Growing sugar beets is not without its challenges. It requires the right land, specialized equipment such as toppers, harvesters, seeding equipment, and significant labor. However, Scott and his family understood the importance of preserving their family's legacy, and they eagerly embraced the hard work and dedication needed to successfully cultivate sugarbeets.

A Change in Crop

The 90s brought a difficult period for wheat farming in North Dakota, with widespread diseases devastating wheat fields and forcing many farmers to quit. In the face of adversity, Scott's family made a crucial decision to switch to growing sugar beets as an alternative crop. Little did they know that this decision would be the turning point that kept them financially afloat and became the best decision they ever made.

Sugar in the US

The United States, on average, produces only half of the sugar we consume. The remaining sugar supply is imported. Sugar can be grown in two forms: sugarbeets and sugarcane. While sugarcane thrives in tropical climates like Florida, Texas, and Louisiana, sugarbeets are grown right here in North Dakota. Once harvested, these sugarbeets are carefully processed into sugar by companies like Crystal Sugar. Interestingly, Crystal Sugar transports the sugar to the sugar dome in Chicago, a major hub for sugar manufacturers.

Being Good Neighbors

As advocates for supporting local, we at CommonGround ND proudly purchase sugar from Crystal Sugar, knowing that we are supporting our neighbors and the local economy. So, next time you see a bag of sugar on the shelf, keep in mind that there's a high chance it came from Crystal Sugar, even if it doesn't say it on the packaging

The story of sugarbeets in North Dakota is not just about a crop; it is a tale of resilience, dedication, and carrying on family legacies. Scott Krogstad's journey exemplifies the deep pride and importance associated with sugarbeet farming. As we explore the history and significance of sugarbeets in North Dakota, we gain a deeper appreciation for the hard work and legacy that farmers like Scott continue to preserve.

So, the next time you see a truck loaded with sugar beets on the road or reach for a bag of crystal sugar, take a moment to appreciate the journey these humble root vegetables have taken to become an essential component of our daily lives.
